RPG, at least there's a bit of higher-order thinking and imagination going on there (though your experience varies depending on your DM and companions). Playing console games puts me in distracted, lizard-brain mode which I don't like.
RPGs because they spur the imagination and promote social interaction. FPSs do none of that.
I play RPGs and tabletop games with my kids. They know how to deal with others. The neighbor kid with every console created hardly ever leaves his basement and is socially maladjusted; all the same stereotypes that old D&D players supposedly had.
Sigh...FPS games for me. I don't have access to an RPG group, and even if I did, I couldn't make the regular time commitment that is required for a good game session. Also, I STILL find that most RPG people I meet are primarily interested in fantasy hack-n-slash games, while I tend to prefer Wild West, Napoleonic, or other modern genres. I am also not sure if I could "get into character mode" quite so easily, anymore. The realities of life sometimes weigh heavy on the modern conscious.
